Dr. Debra M. Thorsheim
Home Town: Dr. Thorsheim has lived in Des Moines for 30+ years. She is originally from South Dakota, but has lived in Iowa most of her life and considers Des Moines home. She grew up and went to school in Swea City and Rock Rapids, Iowa.
Education: Dr. Thorsheim received her undergrad degree in Dental Hygiene from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, South Dakota. She worked as a dental hygienist for a general dentist for one year and then for a periodontal specialty practice for two years. While working as a periodontal hygienist (specializing in treatment of gum disease), Dr. Thorsheim decided to further her career in dentistry and go on to become a dentist. She attended the University of Iowa Dental School in Iowa City, Iowa, and graduated in 1984. When she graduated she worked with a general dentist for four years and then ventured out and started her own practice in 1988. In 1995 she brought in her partner, Dr. Greg Ceraso. They have practiced together for 18 years.
Professional History: Dr. Thorsheim has always been interested in comprehensive, full mouth reconstructive and cosmetic dentistry. She loves to be creative and artistic and wants to give patients optimum dental health and optimum esthetics at the same time. She has studied extensively in these areas of interest. Her teachers and mentors have been: Dr. Peter Dawson—a world renowned leader in comprehensive and reconstructive dentistry with an emphasis on the balance of the bite and the joints. Dr. Thorsheim completed all courses at his institute in St. Petersburg, Florida. Dr. Mark Pieper—leading teacher in the field of TMJ—balance of the joint and the bite—completed all of his courses. Dr. Frank Spear—completed all the courses at his institute in Seattle, Washington—emphasis on esthetics, function, and reconstruction. Dr. John Kois—the leading instructor and institute of science based dentistry, state of the art dentistry. Dr. Thorsheim is a graduate of the institute and continues to study with Dr. Kois and those associated with his institute.
Associations: Member of the ADA—American Dental Association, the AGH—Academy of General Dentistry, the AACD—American Academy of Cosmetic Dentists, the AES—American Equilibration Society, and the IDA—Iowa Dental Association
Awards: As a senior in dental school, Dr. Thorsheim was awarded the Clinician of the Year Award which is presented to the senior with the most outstanding clinical skills and the most likely to succeed in dental practice—she was the first woman to get this award and there were 100 students in her class. Dr. Thorsheim was honored to be one of the 15 dentists in the country to be chosen to be a Dawson Center Faculty Member in 2006 and 2007.
Family: Dr. Thorsheim has two beautiful and successful daughters. They graduated with degrees in finance from the University of Iowa. They both have landed great jobs and are very busy pursuing their careers in the business world.
Hobbies: Dr. Thorsheim is an avid cyclist and hiker. She loves to vacation where she can cycle or hike through the world’s beautiful landscapes. Her top priority on her bucket list is to travel and see as much of the world as possible. One of her passions is photography—so a camera is always part of her gear when traveling.
Dr. Thorsheim loves to apply her creative and artistic skills to the work she does for patients. She dedicates herself to helping patients achieve optimum oral health—and at the same time make the world a better place one smile at a time.
